WESTFORD – The Westford Academy boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are set to play at the TD Garden on Sunday, Jan. 18, in the annual Andrew James Lawson Tournament, giving local athletes a rare chance to compete in the professional arena while supporting an important cause.
The Westford Boys team will face Falmouth High School at 11:30 a.m., while the Westford Girls team takes on Acton-Boxborough Regional at 1:30 p.m. The tournament runs from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and honors Andrew James Lawson, a young athlete with Down syndrome who excelled in sports before he passed after a battle with cancer.
Proceeds benefit the Andrew James Lawson Foundation, which works to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by funding, creating, and supporting programs that promote community inclusion and opportunities for meaningful participation.
For many players, competing at the home of the Boston Celtics is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Andrew James Lawson Tournament offers WA athletes the thrill of playing at an iconic venue, the excitement of high-level competition, and the opportunity to make a positive impact on their community.
Other schools that will be featured at the invitational include Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, Barnstable High School, Belmont Hill School, Beverly High School, Cushing Academy, Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, Falmouth High School, Fontbonne Academy, King School, Kingswood Oxford School, Lexington High School, Lowell High School, Malden Catholic High School, Melrose High School, Milton Academy, The Newman School, and Thayer Academy.
Tickets are $20. Fans and community members are encouraged to attend and support the players while contributing to the foundation’s mission.
