WESTFORD — The Westford Police Department proudly accepted nine Sensory Kits on Thursday through the “See the Able, Not the Label” Sensory Kits for First Responders Project.

Designed to assist individuals with sensory sensitivities during emergencies or other high-stress situations, each kit includes calming tools such as noise-canceling headphones, a teddy bear, and communication cards. These kits will be kept in police cruisers to ensure officers can access them quickly on scene.

The initiative was created by Mayra Gillis, who was inspired by her family’s experiences navigating emergencies with multiple disabilities. Gillis’ mission is to ensure first responders have the tools necessary to provide comfort, understanding, and compassionate care when it matters most.

In a statement posted to social media on Feb. 26, the police department expressed gratitude to Gillis, her mother, and all who contributed to the project, emphasizing its commitment to serving every member of the community with care.
