WESTFORD CENTER — Residents in parts of Westford experienced temporary water discoloration and low water pressure on Wednesday as the Water Department activated a temporary water service line for the Boston Road Water Main Improvement Project.
The temporary service for residents on Boston Road and Hildreth Street was activated the morning of May 13, according to the Westford Water Department.
Due to changes in water flow within the distribution system, residents in neighborhoods near the town center may have experienced periods of discolored water or reduced water pressure between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials said the conditions were similar to what residents typically observed during routine fire hydrant flushing.
The Water Department said the discoloration was not harmful and would dissipate after residents flushed cold water taps, such as a bathtub faucet, for several minutes.
The department also encouraged residents to sign up for electronic notifications regarding water alerts and outdoor water use restrictions through the Town of Westford website.
To register for alerts, residents were directed to visit the town website and navigate to the notifications section to subscribe to water alerts and the town’s main news feed by email or text.
Additional information about essential and non-essential outdoor water use remained available on the town website.
