WESTFORD — A 21-year-old man died Saturday after falling into the water at Merrill’s Quarry, Westford police say.
The Westford Public Safety Communications Center received a 911 call at about 12:53 a.m. Saturday reporting that the man had fallen into the quarry off Tyngsboro Road. The caller said they could no longer see or locate him.
Westford police and firefighters responded to the scene. Police officers found the man face down at the bottom of the quarry, according to a news release from the Westford Police Department. Firefighters removed him from the water and began life-saving measures.
The man was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the fall and prolonged exposure to the water, authorities said.
The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Westford Police Department’s Special Services Division.
Authorities warned that Merrill’s Quarry is private property and an extremely dangerous location, citing steep and unstable drops, deep water and other potentially life-threatening hazards. The property is posted with multiple “No Trespassing” signs.
Entering the quarry without permission is unlawful, police said.
The Westford Police Department offered condolences to the man’s family and friends and thanked police, firefighters and public safety communications personnel for their response.
No further information was immediately available. Authorities said additional information would be released as appropriate as the investigation continues.
