WESTFORD CENTER — Westford residents will have an opportunity to receive free flu vaccinations at a community clinic hosted by the Westford Health Department next week.
The clinic is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Westford Academy cafeteria.
Medical professionals recommend that everyone six months and older receive an annual flu vaccine. Vaccination is particularly encouraged as the fall and winter months approach, when influenza viruses typically circulate more widely.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tens of millions of Americans contract the flu each year. In some cases, it can lead to serious illness, particularly among older adults, young children and people with certain underlying health conditions.
The Westford Health Department also offers a high-dose flu vaccine for people 65 and older. In Massachusetts, flu vaccines are covered by insurance, with no out-of-pocket cost for residents.
Congresswoman Lori Trahan and Rep. Jim Arciero are expected to attend the clinic to receive their flu vaccinations.
Last year, the Health Department held a flu vaccination clinic at the same location, with walk-ins welcome in addition to residents who preregistered. Approximately 693 flu shots were administered by the health department last year with assistance from the Upper Merrimack Valley Medical Reserve Corps, working under the direction of the Westford Health Department.
