WESTFORD — Two good Samaritans on Tuesday saved a cat from drowning in a frozen Nabnasset Lake, according to Animal Control.

Tiki, a blind 20-year-old male cat is believed to have escaped from his home on Birch Road Monday night and is believed to have been chased by a predator over the ice.

He was reported to be approximately 30 to 40 feet short of Fletcher Lane, Animal Control wrote on social media.

Two bystanders, Nate P. and Kris S. took swift action to save the cat, who was later submerged in water with only his head showing.

“Nate hopped into a nearby rowboat and Kris pushed the boat out as far as he could helping Nate navigate from shore. Nate was able to utilize a shovel as he moved, breaking through the ice. He quickly accessed the cat and plucked him from the water moments before he surely would have succumbed to the frigid cold,” Animal Control wrote.

He was taken indoors and wrapped in blankets to dry off.

Animal Control reported that upon arrival at the scene, Tiki was in shock. He was transported to veterinary care, where “his temperature was so low that it didn’t even register on the thermometer.”

Tiki is home with his owners and recovering, with public safety officials thanking both Nate P. and Kris S. for their quick response.

“There is no doubt that we would not have made it in time to save this old man!” Animal Control said.
