WESTFORD — A person was hospitalized following a two-car crash on a busy Westford roadway Tuesday afternoon, which badly damaged two vehicles and a utility pole.
Westford police and firefighters responded to a 911 call about a motor-vehicle collision around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, which occurred on Groton Road (Route 40) between Dunstable Road and Nutting Road.
According to Westford public safety dispatchers, one person was injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Their condition is currently unknown.
WestfordCAT was at the scene and saw a badly damaged Toyota sedan, as well as a Chevrolet pickup truck that had collided with a utility pole. EMS were also at the scene along with police and firefighters, as well as Westford Public Works and National Grid, who were called by police to block the roadway and repair the damaged utility pole.
Witnesses at the scene said it appeared that the drivers of both vehicles may have swerved out of the way to avoid a head-on collision, with the pickup truck hitting the utility pole. One nearby resident said accidents are common on Groton Road, which they said they believe are often caused by speeding.
Both lanes of traffic on Groton Road were blocked off, cutting off one of Westford’s busiest roadways during the start of the Tuesday evening commute. Police were redirecting traffic around the crash and advised all drivers to follow detours, use caution, reduce speed and seek alternate routes to avoid excessive traffic.
Police said Groton Road was later reopened around 5 p.m. to alternating, one-way traffic while National Grid made repairs to the damaged utility pole. The roadway was later fully reopened shortly after 9 p.m.
The cause of the crash is unclear and remains under investigation by police.
