The Ronan McElligott Memorial Playground at Edwards Beach will temporarily close beginning Sept. 28, as crews install new shade structures over the playground’s swing set.
The project is expected to take approximately one month, according to the town. The playground will remain closed to the public while installation work is underway.
The new structures are intended to provide additional shade around the swing area and make the playground more comfortable for children and families during sunny weather.
The improvements are being funded through Westford’s Community Preservation Fund. Funding for the project was approved by voters at Annual Town Meeting on March 25, 2023.
The Community Preservation Fund supports projects related to recreation, open space, historic preservation and community housing in Westford.
Town officials acknowledged that the Ronan McElligott Memorial Playground is a popular recreation destination for local families and thanked residents for their patience during the temporary closure.
While the playground is unavailable, residents are encouraged to visit other recreation areas and facilities throughout Westford. Information about other parks, facilities and recreational amenities is available through the town’s Recreation Department.
The shade installation is the latest improvement planned for the playground, which is located at Edwards Beach. Once completed, the structures will provide covered areas over the swings, offering children and families additional protection from direct sunlight while using the equipment.
Barring changes to the anticipated construction schedule, the playground is expected to reopen approximately one month after the Sept. 28 closure.
The town said it looks forward to reopening the playground to families once the improvements are complete.
