WESTFORD CENTER — A nor’easter that brought heavy rain and strong winds to Massachusetts over the weekend caused some localized impacts in Westford, including a downed tree that temporarily closed a portion of Carlisle Road.
According to an alert posted by the Westford Police Department around 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Carlisle Road was closed between Griffin Road and Old Road after a large tree fell onto power lines near 109 Carlisle Road.
Police said Westford Public Works set up detours at Griffin Road and Acton Road, while National Grid responded to the scene to remove the tree, which was suspended above the road by the power lines.
Residents were advised to avoid the area and police urged drivers who needed to travel through to follow the posted detour and reduce their speed.
Shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday, police t announced that National Grid had removed the tree and that Carlisle Road had reopened.
The road closure was one of the localized effects of the nor’easter, which brought periods of heavy rain and strong winds to the region throughout the weekend.
By the end of the storm Monday evening, approximately 1.26 inches of rain had fallen in Westford, with wind gusts up to 40 mph recorded in the Westford area during the height of the storm on Saturday evening.
While the storm caused more significant impacts in other parts of Massachusetts and New England, there were no reports of major widespread damage in Westford.
Residents were nevertheless advised by Public Works to remain cautious around downed trees and power lines and avoid using town fields and parks, while several community events were canceled because of the weather.
