WESTFORD — A town intersection will undergo a traffic pattern change as officials prepare to convert an existing two-way stop into a four-way stop.

The intersection of Lowell Road at Brookside Road and Chamberlain Road will be converted to a four-way stop on Thursday, Nov. 12, according to an Oct. 28 announcement from the Town of Westford.

The town is coordinating with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to implement the change following a safety evaluation of the intersection.

According to town officials, MassDOT determined that the intersection’s crash history met the federal criteria for implementing all-way stop control.

As part of the conversion, new stop signs and “STOP AHEAD” warning signs will be installed on all approaches to the intersection.

Pavement markings will also be added, including stop bars, to indicate where motorists must stop.

Temporary electronic message boards and “NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN AHEAD” signs will be placed near the intersection to notify drivers of the upcoming changes.

Portable message boards will be installed ahead of the scheduled conversion to give motorists advance notice.

Town officials are encouraging drivers to exercise caution and allow additional travel time while adjusting to the new traffic pattern. The changes are intended to improve safety for motorists traveling through the intersection.
