Arts After School JR

February 27 @ 4:30 pm - April 30 @ 5:30 pm

$25

A 10-week program for ages 7-10, February 27-April 30, 2024, Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30pm. Enjoy a wide variety of 1- to 2-class projects will be offered. Lessons are inspired by artists – both contemporary & historical – and are used as a starting point. Students are encouraged to express their personal creative voice in a supportive community environment of their peers. If a project runs more than one week, attendance at both sessions are suggested. Sessions include…

Faith Ringgold Mixed Media Family Quilts (Weeks 1 & 2): Faith Ringgold inspired family and friends with mixed media quilts. Students will create and image of themselves with either friends or family as a focal point using drawing and painting media of their choice, other images, patterns and designs are added as they create a beautiful watercolor paper quilt that shares their own unique story.

Charcoal & Acrylic Paintings with Birds (Weeks 3 & 4): Look to artist Susan Schwake for inspiration as we work with a combination of charcoal and acrylic paint to create a painting of a bird. Students will begin by drawing a bird using simple shapes with charcoal and then they will use acrylic paint to add color for the bird and background space using a variety of painting techniques with brushes.

Watercolor Dragonflies (Week 5): Use wet on wet and splatter techniques with watercolor to create our own beautiful dragonflies with a variety of colors. Step by step instruction is given as we practice each technique and choices of color and design will be encouraged.

Op Art Shapes (Weeks 6 & 7): Look to Op Artist Victor Vasurely for inspiration as we focus on the element of space in Art to create an Op Art shape that appears three dimensional on a two dimensional surface with a flat background. A variety of drawing media will be used to complete these pieces.

Scribble Drawings (Week 8): Looking at the works of artist Anne O. Smith, consider the way she uses scribbles in her drawings to create beautiful images of birds and nature. Students will then try this practice and discover what types of images that they can find in their scribbles. Once they are identified they will outline and create their image with added color and details. Images can be cut out and mounted on a variety of papers or the background space will be used as it is. This is a wonderful creative practice that opens up imagination and inspiration.

Metallic Mosaic Paintings (Weeks 9 & 10): Look to impressionist painters and their use of color for inspiration as students create their own mosaic tiles with metallic paint and textural media. A simple drawing is done of an object that the student will choose. Once this is done they will apply their hand cut tiles to fill in the spaces with color and design.

Post-program public exhibition in the Main Hall May 13, 2024, 7-8pm.
