Westford Jr. Ghosts A Team 12, Acton-Boxborough Colonials 44

Westford had a strong first half but Acton-Boxborough proved stronger with a final score of 12-44.

Westford received the ball first and moved down field with runs from Christian Hall, Stephen Tubianosa, Andrew Provencher, and Ryan McKeon. Unable to score, Westford punted the ball away. AB quickly went to work, putting 14 points on the board in back-to-back possessions.

Westford’s first points were scored by Logan Wendt on a 60-yard run. Philip Sutherland and Connor Graham had good stops, but couldn’t prevent AB from scoring again.  Hall immediately answered with a 70-yard kickoff return, getting a helpful block from Michael Paulauskas. On AB’s next possession, Josh Ducharme and Graham were able to stop a couple of runs, but AB persisted to make the score at the half of 30-12.

AB started the second half with a touchdown. During the Ghosts next series, Colonials had a pick-six, adding to their score. Westford moved the ball in their next possession, but turned it over on downs. Daniel Osgood, Andrew Ha, and Liam Sullivan were able to stop the run but ran out of time to rally a comeback.

During the B and C team games, the Westford Jr. Ghosts Cheer squads performed the routines that powered their success at a recent local league competition. The B and D cheer teams did well enough to advance to the Eastern Massachusetts Conference Competition at the Tsongas Arena on Oct. 31, where the F team will also be performing an exhibition.

Westford D Team 33, Acton-Boxborough 0

The Westford Jr. Ghosts D Team had an eventful morning last Sunday, clinching a spot in the play-offs by notching their fifth consecutive win with a shutout against rival Acton-Boxborough.

Captains Luke Reynolds, Ryan Blagg, Jack Herrmann and Ben Schaffer stormed onto Leary Field and showed no mercy for a solid four quarters.  First quarter defenders Drew Wilson, Henry Babineau, Jason Pillion, TJ Kane and Connor Gleason forced turnover after turnover, and never allowed Acton-Boxborough to advance further than the Westford 40-yard yard line.  Tanner Whitehouse made an amazing tackle in the backfield forcing A-B to punt the ball.

In a series of passing and running plays, Reynolds and Blagg got the ball down the field quickly for Westford’s first of many touchdowns.

A-B kicked off to start the second half. Bo MacCormack caught it and he was off to the races.  He ran over 50 yards into the end zone for Westford’s second touchdown.  With Reynolds scoring the extra point, the Jr. Ghosts were ahead 14-0.  Peter Burdin delivered a perfect kick that Reynolds was able to recover to regain possession.  Matthew Morash received the handoff and ran the ball almost 30 yards for another Westford touchdown.  Thomas Galvin scored the extra point to bring the score to 21-0.

The Westford kick-return team was on fire, recovering yet another Burdin kick.  MacCormack zig-zagged down field to score another touchdown. Westford’s defense forced another turnover and offensive blockers Aidan Murphy, Xenia Khusid, Jack Nordhougen and TJ Kane propelled Tyler Murray down the field and into the end-zone for Westford’s fifth touchdown.

Westford returns home next week to play Saugus.

Westford Jr. Ghosts E team vs Acton-Boxborough

The Westford Jr. Ghosts squeezed past Acton-Boxborough Colonials in the Mighty Mites’ toughest challenge of the season.

Soon after the opening kick, Westford knew it would have all it could handle. The Colonials swarmed every running play with five, six or seven tacklers, shutting down most of Westford’s slashing outside running attack.  A-B’s quick defensive line darted into Westford’s backfield to cause fumbles and disrupt several plays before they started.

After early jitters, the Jr. Ghosts settled down and were able to move the ball behind the blocking of Odin Scott, Gavin Dean, Tony Babineau, Nate Branco, Micah Carsto, Teddy Nordhougen, and Jack LaFond.

With the Colonials linebackers and secondary playing far off the line to smother outside runs, the Jr. Ghosts pounded the ball inside with carries from Kaden Silton, Orion Saunders, and Quinn Reynolds. Repeated runs behind the guards drew the defense inside and opened up the wing for long dashes by James McDermott and two touchdown runs from Andrew Stodden.

Justin Davighi added a critical two-point kick that would be invaluable at the game’s end and provided the slim margin of victory.

Westford’s defense forced A-B to turn the ball over on downs several times during the game. Tyler Schutt and Mason Bergeron helped seal outside runs with energetic play at line and linebacker. Noah Davidopolous, Bruce Davies and Leo Babineau anchored the corners with key drive-ending tackles or good positioning.
