The Nashoba Grizzlies had three teams in the Massachusetts District 8 championship games this past weekend at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, MA. The Squirt AA, Squirt AAA and the Pee Wee AAA Nashoba Grizzlies teams all won their games and will now be in the state finals.
The Pee Wee AAA beat Concord-Carlisle in a close game by a score of 2-1. Both Nashoba goals were scored by Brandon Bailey and assisted by Matt Wing. Christian Guglielmo was solid in net for the Grizzlies.
The Squirt AAA beat the Concord-Carlisle Squirt AAA team by a 6-1 score. Jason Funaro and Will Gaynor each scored two goals for the Grizzlies. Drew Kapetanakis and Tyler Frazee each scored a goal, and Daniel Son and Ben Logan each had an assist. Jonathan Doherty stopped all but one shot for the Grizzlies.
The Squirt AA team played a very talented Framingham team in the District 8 Playdown finals on Monday morning. The Framingham Jr. Flyers came out strong scoring 19 seconds into the first period. The Grizzlies held there head high and kept on fighting, The fought for the puck and peppered the Framingham goalie, but he was stingy. With a minute left, Framingham scored another, 2-0 Framingham. The Grizzlies kept up their assault and with 35 seconds left, Tyler Olsen netted one after a battle in front of the goal, ending the period with the score 2-1. The battle raged with great chances to score by Ben Svoboda, Mike Blake and Josh Laquidara.
The goalie had Bryan Fitzgerald’s number as Bryan took numerous shots that were saved. Charlie Bonenfant fought on offence and raced back to back check helping out the defense. With 58 seconds left in the second period, Framingham netted a goal to lead 3-1. Nashoba wasn’t done, they answered with a goal of their own by Owen Crann with 25 seconds left in the second and the game was on. The third period saw three more goals by Crann, his last assisted by the strong forward, Svoboda.  Not only was the third period all about goals, Luke Buretta kept this team in the game for all three periods. The defensive paring of Zoe Musante and Riley Molongoski along with the ninja like Porter Gallant and the ever strong Jarod Dantas sealed the deal for the Grizzlies. This win advances the Squirt AA team to the State Tournament in Springfield at the end of February.
