The three fundamental ways that a citizen can tell whether their Board of Selectmen has done their job is the quality of town services, the level of taxation and the town’s bond rating. During the time that Scott Hazelton has been a member of the board, the quality of town services has never been better, the tax rate remains under the proposition 21/2 limit, and our bond rating remains high. As Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, this speaks volumes about Scott’s leadership and his commitment to the taxpayer.
Add to this the fact that during Scott’s time on the board, the town was able to negotiate a reduction in electric rates, acquire more open space to preserve our rural character, and worked to improve public safety, it is very difficult to expect more. His leadership style is one that emphasis openness, patience and collaboration. He is not afraid of criticism, cheerfully welcoming input to improve his performance.
As a member of the Planning Board, I can personally say that Scott Hazelton has had our back during several contested decisions. These were directly related to the town’s ability to chart its own course with regard to permitted uses. His willingness to stay the course and support our decisions has greatly helped Westford master its own destiny.
The choice for this town election with regard to Scott Hazelton is very easy. He is a decent and respectful individual, who is sincere in his commitment to the town and his performance backs that up. Scott Hazelton knows and has done the job of selectmen for the past three years. If something isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Vote Scott Hazelton for selectman on Tuesday May 3, 2016.
