State Rep. James Arciero recently joined the fourth grade students of Westford’s Abbot Elementary School for their annual Immigration Celebration Day.
During this annual event, the students portray immigrants entering the United States, re-enacting the difficulties faced by the millions who passed through the Ellis island to become citizens of the United States. Wearing authentic period clothing, the day is the culminating activity of their study of immigration and how different people came to reside in the United States. Â In addition to the history of immigration, students are instructed in the constitutional rights and the responsibilities of citizenship.
As part of the program, Arciero discussed the history of the American flag, the meaning of its stars, stripes and colors, and the proper way to fold the flag. Joining him were Westford public schools Superintendent Everett V. Olsen and Assistant Superintendent Kerry Clery.
