The One-Man Circus in-a-suitcase: Saturday, July 15 at 11 a.m. From Kevin O’Keefe’s suitcase an entire circus emerges: tent, band, lights, a boisterous ringmaster, the incredible Bumbilini Family, the Magician to the Stars, and Keefer–an innocent trying to run away and join the circus. This FREE program is funded by the KDK Foundation in honor of Kurt Kelly. Free tickets are available for children 4 and up along with their caregivers.
The Friends of the Library sponsor: Rolie Polie Guacamole Family Concert: Monday, July 17 at 2 p.m. Winner of the prestigious Parents’ Choice® and NAPPA Awards, Rolie Polie Guacamole, offers a rocking show that stylishly dresses up original tunes and classic covers. Tickets ($2.00) for children and adults are available by phone or in person. This program is for all ages.
The Cookbook Book Club meets on Tuesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. The Cookbook Book Club is dedicated to exploring cookbooks and sampling new recipes. Copies of this month’s choice, Fast Food My Way, by Jacques Pepin are available for check out at the Main Desk. If you would like to bring a dish from the cookbook (not required to participate), please contact Sarah Regan in the Information Services Department at 978-399-2309. The Cookbook Book Club is funded by the Friends of the Library and meets monthly on the third Tuesday of each month. No registration required.
Teen & Tween Taste Test Challenge: Wednesday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Challenge your taste buds by tasting and comparing various name brand junk foods with its inexpensive equivalent. Warning for those with allergies…food will not be labeled. Registration is required either by phone or online. Supplies generously paid for by the Friends of the J. V. Fletcher Library.
Camp Read A-Lot: Wednesday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m. Join us for lots of singing and dancing around our indoor campfire. Program takes place in the Story Hour Room. This free registration program is for ages 3-7. Pre-register at the Children’s Desk.
A History of Howard Johnson’s: How a Massachusetts Soda Fountain Became an American Icon: Thursday, July 20 at 7 p.m.: Howard Johnson created an orange-roofed empire of ice cream stands and restaurants that stretched from Maine to Florida and all the way to the West Coast. Popularly known as the “Father of the Franchise Industry,” Johnson delivered good food and prices that brought appreciative customers back for more. The attractive white Colonial Revival restaurants, with eye-catching porcelain tile roofs, illuminated cupolas and sea blue shutters, were described in Reader’s Digest in 1949 as the epitome of “eating places that look like New England town meeting houses dressed up for Sunday.” Boston historian and author Anthony M. Sammarco recounts how Howard Johnson introduced twenty-eight flavors of ice cream, the “Tendersweet” clam strips, grilled Frankfurt’s and a menu of delicious and traditional foods that families eagerly enjoyed when they traveled.
