If you want to accomplish as much as you possibly can, the most important thing to get right is the vision or goal with which you begin. This is essentially the same as setting your GPS; without a starting and an ending point, you don’t stand much chance of getting to your destination. Unfortunately, many people don’t know how to correctly write goals, and this can ultimately prevent them from standing out in their chosen field. But if you’re setting off to write a goal, you should know that visions are often more helpful than goals, so have a vision not a goal.  That’s what we’re going to explore here.

The Difference Between a Goal and a Vision

So what is the difference between a goal and a vision? Essentially, a goal is something you write down that is very concrete and simple. A goal may for example be to lose 10 pounds in two months. That’s a goal, but it’s not nearly as effective as a vision designed with the same end in mind.

This same ambition posed as a vision rather than a goal would instead be more the idea or vision of actually being in shape. You might visualize yourself looking slim, toned and feeling healthy. You might imagine yourself buying clothes that are a size smaller, going for a jog or to the gym and feeling great about yourself. That’s your vision.

A vision can also be an image of yourself standing in a corner office and looking out over the world knowing that you’re in a position of great importance and power or it can be a vision of you having your own business doing something you love and being wildly successful at it.

Doing this helps you to get a picture of what you want and what the emotion behind that goal is. You can have several goals that contribute to one vision in your life.

Why Visions Work Better Than Goals

So why are visions more successful than goals?

Visions are more effective because they have a more emotional connection for us. When you visualize something, the same regions fire in your brain as though it is actually happening. We feel the emotion of accomplishing that vision. It’s this emotion we can use to motivate ourselves to see our goals become real as visions; that gives us more emotional fuel to follow through with our plans.

Vision boards have become very popular, and you can easily create your own by cutting out photos of things, people, adventures etc. that you would like to create for yourself in your own life.  Some people use a cork board, and others just tape the photos to a large sheet of paper. Keep the board in a place where you’ll see it often.

Visions give your goals a bigger why.
