With April 14’s Select Board vote the Town has taken a significant step forward in terms of local climate action. In a unanimous vote the board directed the town manager to establish a new multi-tiered Municipal Electric Aggregation contract that establishes a standard default rate that includes 10 percent renewable energy ABOVE the state minimum, along with new 50 percent and 100 percent renewable energy opt-up levels and an opt-down level as well.
Adding 10 percent renewable energy to the default rate is the most significant step forward and is equivalent to adding 600 solar homes in town with a simple contract change.
This a win-win-win…for the residents, the town, and our imperiled planet.
Westford Climate Action would like to thank all those who supported this effort by mobilizing, calling and emailing our Board of Selectmen. One member said after 40 emails (all in support of our recommendation) she stopped counting.
The Board recognized Westford Climate Action members and clearly took our recommendation and the data we provided very seriously. We appreciate that.
Far and away this is the biggest step forward our community has taken to combat the climate crisis. We are in the game!–Carol Morse and Beth Perkins, co-chairs of Westford Climate Action, Westford, Massachusettts
