WESTFORD — The Town of Westford has recently received grants from several state and federal programs.
Municipal Road Safety Program
The first was a grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security for the FY25 Municipal Road Safety Program. This grant is $18,656 of approximately $12.42 million in traffic safety grants distributed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to Massachusetts communities.
This grant will be used by the Department of Public Works and the police department to provide community education, distribution of pedestrian bike safety equipment, community organizational items and enforcement of high-risk areas such as speeding and distracted driving.
MIIA Award
A grant of $9,921.30 was given for the Risk Management Grant Program from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Agency. Funding will be used to reduce the risk associated with building management systems including safety and communications equipment for DPW among other items.
Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail
The town received a grant from the Friends of Bruce Freeman Rail Trail for $3,640 for rail crossing supplies as was requested by the DPW. This will fund the purchase of equipment to replace crossing signs along the trail.
Select Board Clerk Chris Barrett said that the Town will be postponing the grant from Friends of Bruce Freeman Rail Trail due to “procedural issues” that will be discussed “at another time.”
The Select Board unanimously accepted the other two grants from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and MIIA on Oct. 8.
