WESTFORD — A cat was rescued and a home was partially damaged, following an electrical fire on Forge Village Road in Westford last week.
On Monday, Oct. 20, shortly before 1 p.m., the Westford Fire Department and Police Department received an emergency call reporting a fire at a home on 33 Forge Village Rd.
When they arrived at the scene, firefighters located the fire within the exterior wall of the attached garage, which they confirmed was an electrical fire involving the main electrical feed to the home.
Firefighters then called National Grid to disconnect power to the home, and struck a second alarm, bringing in mutual support from firefighters from Ayer, Groton and Littleton, who assisted Westford firefighters in extinguishing the fire.
Carlisle, Chelmsford, and Tyngsborough firefighters also provided support by covering Westford’s fire stations while firefighters put out the fire.
While no residents were home during the fire, firefighters said they rescued a cat, who was transported by Westford Animal Control to a nearby animal hospital for evaluation.
According to Animal Control, the cat, named Sassafras, was located by firefighters after he “popped out from a suitcase laying on the ground”.
While at the animal hospital, Sassafras received immediate care, which Animal Control said included 24 hours of oxygen therapy and IV fluids, before he was safely returned home to his family in a stable and healthy condition.
It is not yet clear what caused the fire, which remains under investigation by the Westford Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit.
