BOSTON Westford’s state senator John Cronin was recently named the new Senate Chair for the Joint Committee on Bonding, Capital Expenditures and State Assets, for the remainder of the state legislature’s 194th session, his office announced earlier this month.

“I’m grateful for the confidence of my colleagues to have the opportunity to lead this important committee during a time when our Commonwealth is facing significant economic challenges and opportunities for growth,” Cronin said in a statement on April 7. “The Joint Committee on Bonding plays a significant role in shaping state policy, spurring economic growth, and ensuring that Massachusetts remains on strong fiscal ground. I am excited to have this opportunity and will work diligently to deliver for the people of North Central and the entire Commonwealth.”

As Joint Committee Chair, Cronin will be responsible for overseeing legislation relating to a wide range of state issues, including all matters concerning state lands and buildings, as well as any legislation relative to giving, loaning, or pledging of credit in the state.

Additionally, Cronin will be responsible for legally reviewing all bonding authorization bills passed by the Senate, which authorize borrowing to fund long term projects, such as housing construction or broad economic development initiatives, that aren’t funded through annual expenditures.

According to Cronin’s office, his appointment to the new role filled a vacant position left by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy of Lowell, who died in October of last year. Cronin’s other role as Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security will remain unaffected, however he will give up his role as Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Emergency Preparedness and Management, which will be filled by newly elected Sen. Vanna Howard of Lowell.
