WESTFORD — Residents and student-athletes have a new place to run, play and compete following the completion of the Stony Brook Track and Athletic Court Improvement Project.
On June 25, the Town of Westford announced that construction has finished at the Stony Brook School athletic complex, replacing aging facilities with a modern track and upgraded athletic courts designed to serve students and the broader community.
With construction now complete, the athletic complex is expected to serve the community for years to come, providing updated facilities that improve safety, accessibility and recreational opportunities.
The renovated complex includes a six-lane running track, two basketball courts and five tennis courts that are also lined for pickleball. Additional improvements include ADA-accessible walkways, new perimeter fencing, portable bleachers, a storage shed and enhancements to support track-and-field events.
The project addresses longstanding safety concerns with the previous track, which had deteriorated over time. Tree roots had pushed sections of the surface upward, creating uneven conditions and tripping hazards that limited the facility’s ability to host track meets and other athletic events.
Director of Facilities Jeff Goodwin described the project as a long-term investment in public recreation that benefits both Westford Public Schools and the community at large.
The improvements were funded through the Community Preservation Committee using Community Preservation Act funds. The project is intended to preserve and enhance public recreational assets while providing safe, accessible spaces for exercise and competition.
Students, school athletic teams and residents are expected to benefit from the upgraded facilities. In addition to supporting physical education classes and school sports, the complex provides opportunities for walking, running, basketball, tennis and pickleball outside of school hours.
The addition of pickleball lines reflects the sport’s growing popularity and allows the courts to accommodate multiple recreational activities without requiring separate facilities.
Planning for the project began after town officials identified the deteriorating condition of the existing track several years ago. The effort included engineering, design and funding approvals before construction began in 2025.
For local athletes, families and recreational users, the completion of the project marks the return of a community asset that had fallen into disrepair but now offers modern amenities designed to meet the town’s current and future needs.
