Abbot Elementary School -Westford Speakers in December:2015
Abbot Elementary School 4th graders were mesmerized by the stories heard while sitting on a buffalo rug inside a real Plains Indian teepee. Abbot 4th Graders were visited by Native American speakers in December 2015. The Speakers remained in character throughout the entire presentation and children hung on their words.  Only in one final statement did they come out of character to remind children that these presentations represented their work and that the stereotypes of old did not represent the Native Americans of today. In their “real life” they could be a neighbor or friend or colleague.
Abbot fifth graders met and wrote with author, Rob Buyea in December 2015.  Mr. Buyea is best known for his Mr. Terupt series of novels. Mr. Buyea shared his words with the 5th Graders and taught them the importance of a character’s evolution. The presentation was followed by writing workshops.  Children wrote stories from the perspective of a character in his Terupt series. The culminating moment for most children was when Mr. Buyea read their stories aloud. It was a very special time.
