The proposed school calendar obviously and irrefutably favors one religion over another, and since this is a PUBLIC SCHOOL system, it violates the U. S. Constitution, which seeks to insure the separation of church and state.

That the superintendent asserts that he can’t staff the schools on Good Friday, and that neighboring school systems are closed on that day, ironically demonstrates how pervasive the bias and non-separation of church and state is. That it has been going on for years is no excuse. The superintendent’s sop to “send out a text to all staff members in the schools to make sure they understand the importance of religious and cultural observances” is something that should be an inseparable part of the message the school experience provides to Westford students. Doesn’t this already happen? Apparently not.

And shame on the WestfordCat News Online for labeling Emily Blumberg and Rabbi Shoshana Perry as “non-Christians,” This label, applied incorrectly to those who spoke in support of more diversity and sincerity, just serves to demonstrate the need for exactly that. Bravo to them for their courage and for confronting the School Committee.

We are all humans inhabiting this shrinking planet; we need to work harder at understanding our differences and learning to respect and live peacefully with one another. Support a better school calendar that promotes this, as a small first step for mankind. — Paul Cully, Patriot Lane
