Volunteers of the Upper Merrimack Valley Medical Reserve Corps were on the scene at the Ride for Liv / Run for Liv on July 14 with a blood pressure cuff for anyone who wanted to be checked out.
The annual fundraising event attracts athletes from throughout the region to race in a 5k run, or bike for 50, 23 or 6 miles. Proceeds go to Alternative House of Lowell — a shelter for women escaping from a situation of domestic violence. The Live for Liv Foundation also presents scholarships each year to two Westford Academy graduating seniors. The remaining funds are building toward an endowment that will fund the rent for an apartment in the event that a victim of domestic violence is in need of financial assistance and shelter once she leaves her home.
The Medical Reserve Corps serves Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Lowell, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro, and Westford. It was founded in 2001. Here is News Director Joyce Pellino Crane interviewing MRC Coordinator Nancy Burns about the service.
