WESTFORD — Assistant Library Director Kristina Leedberg has shared the most recent edition of “What’s Happening at the Library?” with WestfordCAT.
Unless otherwise noted, all of our programs are generously funded by the Friends of the Library, Inc.
Director’s Corner: Library Building Expansion Approved – Thank you! Thank you to everyone who attended Special Town Meeting and the November 8 election and voted to approve the Library Building Project! This could not have happened without the hard work of the Friends of the Library, the Board of Trustees, the Library Building Committee, the Library Staff, and of course, all of you who took the time to show up and express through your vote how important the future of the Library is to the town of Westford. We look forward to providing the town of Westford with new services and a state of the art Library!
Holiday Closure: In observance of Veterans Day, the Library will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11 2022. The Library will re-open on Sat., November 12 at 10 a.m.
Book Bunch Storytime: Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. This weekly drop-in story time is for kids ages 2 to 4. Join us as we share music, movement, and really FUN books for the younger kids in this program. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before the program and go to the Children’s Desk upstairs and ask for name tags for each child. Once you have your name tags, go down to the Meeting Room and wait at the door. The doors to the Meeting Room close when the program is full and will remain closed. Latecomers are welcome to visit the children’s room upstairs. No registration required.

Blanchard Middle School Book Club: Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 2:00 p.m.: Join Jess, Mrs. Brandt and your peers to discuss some great books! We will meet once per month in the school library. Just fill out the Google Form on the Blanchard Book Club Website before each meeting to choose your next book.
VIRTUAL JOB SEARCH HELP FOR 50 & OVER – JOB SEARCH HELP FOR 50 & OVER – Interview Practice: Wednesday, November 16, 9:30-11:30 a.m. The Massachusetts Library Collaborative’s 50+ Job Seekers Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 9:30am to 11:30am, via Zoom. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your “Encore Career”, this networking group program is perfect for you! YA Writers’ Club: Fri., Nov. 18 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Calling all writers! Get together to support each other through the ultimate writing challenge: National Novel Writing Month! Many successful authors have written their first drafts during NaNoWriMo! We will draft our novels, track our progress online, and meet to share ideas and advice. If you don’t want to participate in NaNoWriMo, you’re welcome to come share ideas and encourage others. Register here.
Candle Making Workshop: Thursday, Nov.17 at 6:30 p.m. You’ll be surprised at how much you don’t know about candles! This workshop is an introduction to your choice of fragrance candle making. We will discuss types of candles and which waxes are best suited for which type of candle, wick, and heat resistant container sizes, the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils and complete instructions on how to burn a candle. Each participant will make one container candle using soy wax and can choose from a variety of seasonally inspired fragrance oils. Once the wax has cooled undisturbed for approximately 24 hours, the participants will take their candle home and may burn it after a 2 week curing period. Approximate size is: net weight 2.50 oz. (2.5”h x 2.5”w). The wax is hot and fragrance oils can be strongly scented. The program is only for ages 18 and up. Program starts promptly, no admission is allowed after instructions are given. Math Club: Wednesdays on 11/23, and 12/28 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Join YA Librarian Jess and library volunteer Patrick for a meeting of mathematical minds. Each meeting we will learn theories, solve problems, and build upon your math knowledge with fun activities and games. For Grades 6-8. Register here.
Annual Magazine Giveaway Signup now underway! Each fall we discard our oldest magazine issues to make room for the incoming year, and we offer them to our patrons first before recycling them. We are now taking requests for our 2021 issues! If you want any particular titles, contact Charles Schweppe at 978-399-2304 or at cschweppe@westfordma.gov. This is a “first come, first serve” service. You’ll be notified in December when your titles are ready.
Staff Recommends: Lauren Evans recommends Fredrik Backman’s newest novel, The Winners. “Maya Andersson and Benji Ovich, two young people who left in search of a life far from the forest town, come home and joyfully reunite with their closest childhood friends. There is a new sense of optimism and purpose in the town, embodied in the impressive new ice rink that has been built down by the lake. Two years have passed since the events that no one wants to think about. Everyone has tried to move on, but there’s something about this place that prevents it. The destruction caused by a ferocious late-summer storm reignites the old rivalry between Beartown and the neighboring town of Hed, a rivalry which has always been fought through their ice hockey teams. Maya’s parents, Peter and Kira, are caught up in an investigation of the hockey club’s murky finances, and Amat–once the star of the Beartown team–has lost his way after an injury and a failed attempt to get drafted into the NHL. Simmering tensions between the two towns turn into acts of intimidation and then violence. All the while, a fourteen-year-old boy grows increasingly alienated from this hockey-obsessed community and is determined to take revenge on the people he holds responsible for his beloved sister’s death.
