WESTFORD — The following release was submitted by resident Wendy Gloyd for publication and distribution.
A vibrant gathering of approximately 150-175 people assembled at the Westford Town Common on Saturday as cloudy skies gave way to reveal bright sunshine just in time for the 5th Annual India Independence Day Flag Raising and Celebration in Westford. Organized by the India Association of Greater Boston (IAGB), this event has been a cornerstone for the Indian American community in Boston and the MetroWest area for the past five years, celebrating the rich heritage and contributions of this vibrant community.
The event featured a dynamic 40-minute program that included heartfelt speeches, the American national anthem to honor the U.S. flag, and the spirited hoisting of the Indian flag accompanied by the Indian national anthem. This celebration commemorates Aug. 15, 1947, the day India gained independence from British colonial rule, marking a significant milestone in the history of the world’s most populous democracy.
IAGB President Tanu Phoenix opened the event by reflecting on the journey of the flag-raising ceremonies, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic with just 12 attendees practicing social distancing. She expressed gratitude for Westford’s warm hospitality and noted that the town has now become one of only eight anchor towns in the MetroWest area, serving as important hubs for fostering community unity.
Select Board Chair Scott Hazelton shared his thoughts on the importance of such events in Westford, emphasizing the shared values of democracy between the U.S. and India. He acknowledged the legacy of passive resistance championed by figures like Mohandas Gandhi and the civil disobedience movement that played a crucial role in India’s struggle for independence.
In a touching moment, Ms. Phoenix felicitated (honored) Mr. Hazelton with a traditional Indian shawl, a symbol of respect and honor in Indian culture, representing community support, goodwill, and warm embrace.
Anita Tonakarn-Nguyen then took the stage on behalf of State Rep. James Arciero, presenting IAGB with a House citation to recognize their contributions. Ms. Nguyen, who was part of the Select Board during the inaugural flag-raising, reflected on the event’s remarkable growth.
Wendy Gloyd, representing the Westford Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, expressed pride in supporting such flag-raising events, highlighting their role in celebrating the diversity that enriches Westford.
The celebration also featured an enchanting dance performance by Guru Jeyanthi Ghatraju, who captivated the audience with her artistic expression, blending music and movement to convey the passion behind the flag-raising and its historical significance. The audience was further treated to cultural dance performances by participants of all ages, showcasing the richness of Indian culture with music, costumes, and movement.
Founded in 1962, the IAGB is a sociocultural organization dedicated to uniting the Indian American community across Greater Boston through cultural activities, community service, and civic engagement. This year’s celebration honored India’s independence and reinforced the bonds of community and cultural pride that continue to thrive in Westford and beyond.
