A vehicle valued at about $350K was at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Westford on July 14 as part of the day’s activities at the Ride for Liv/Run for Liv. The vehicle was open for children to tour.

Sgt. Mark Bourque, a Tyngsborough police officer and a member of the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, gave WestfordCAT News Director Joyce Pellino Crane a look inside the vehicle. [Continue reading below]

“We call this the bear cat,” said Bourque. “It’s an armored personnel carrier…it’s bullet proof and it’s pretty expensive.”

There are three such “bear cats” in the NEMLEC region, which covers 65 communities from Natick to Gloucester. This particular vehicle was used in Watertown on the night when Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed by Special Weapons and Tactics team members, and his brother Dzhokhar was found hiding inside a boat in someone’s Watertown backyard. When not in use, the vehicle is parked in Lynnfield at the Police Department, ready for the 35 SWAT team members to assemble for critical situations.

The police officers were on hand to support the main mission of the Live for Liv Foundation — to raise awareness of domestic violence.
